‘HOLIDAY’ HAS DISAPPEARED FROM THE H-NET’S TRANSLATORS’ DICTIONARY!
Summer is on its way out…… The fresh breeze is expected to cool the engines off, instead hot air fires up the burning engines of the 2018 Harley-Davidson models. Not even deluges of water from the 2017 World Aquatics Championships can cool them down!
It is late August, most of us are still on holiday enjoying the ’dolce-vita’, children happily lick their ice-creams while parents appreciate a cold pint. This time of year the majority of the population takes time off to recharge the batteries, except the H-Net translating team!
DO TRANSLATORS REALLY HATE TAKING TIME OFF?
You probably think that translators and interpreters are workaholics, or they do not like summer, or are simply insane! No, they aren’t! However, they have launched themselves into enormous projects that will last them until the log-fires season sets in. While holiday makers occupy the beach and lake resorts, tourists crowd airport cafés, the H-Net translating team ’localize’, ’trans-create’ and jump into the Korean-English press conference at 2017 World Aquatics Championships. At the same time translating video footage of the new 2018 Harley-Davidson models. They are dynamic!
NEW H-D CUSTOM REVOLUTION, FINA SPECIALITIES AND THE SOUTH-COREAN PRESS CONFERENCE
During the translating of the FINA’s legal documents and contracts there were less awkward situations than during this simultaneous interpreting event. No matter how knowledgeable the interpreter is in the various languages, they also needs to be prepared for the impossible unknown, the human factor!
The press conference offered an opportunity to the event’s organizers from Gwangju to introduce the completed venues. It is only natural that situations arise, ‘’Well, the presenter does not speak much English” or ‘’Well, we shall improvise now!” most important is that these are handled with sensitivity and professionalism. For the translators this is a unique adrenalin drivenexperience providing the ultimate in communication.
CHEERING IN LONDON
Those who did not work at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships went to Haymarket in the heart of London. The H-Net team cheered with the Rileys Sports Bar’s local supporters the unexpected British Silver medal in the Men’s 4 × 100M medley relay on the finals day.
The H-Net team works hard at any cost, putting customers before all else sacrificing holidays, a fresh fish bbq on the beach, or a refreshing swim. The sacrifice has its rewards, over the past 20 years we have grown, evolved and successfully supported our partners with their ventures in 33 foreign languages, in Budapest, Rileys in London or on the banks of the River Danube!
